Best-Selling SUVs: Year on year, sales of SUVs are increasing in India, revealing the growing popularity of this body type over sedans and utility vehicles. While a true SUV is made to conquer rough terrain and is the preferred mode of transportation for off-roading, in India, SUVs have become premium vehicles with tall bodywork that offers a good commanding view of the road and is also very practical.
Momentum for SUVs in 2023
The year 2023 has started with new momentum for SUVs in India as four of the top 10 best-selling cars in January 2023 belong to the SUV body type.

Tata Nexon Takes the Lead
Tata Nexon secured the first position to become the best-selling SUV in India for the month of January 2023 with a total of 15,567 units sold last month. This is a healthy 13% jump from the 13,816 units sold in the corresponding month last year.
Hyundai Creta Comes in Second
Following the Nexon is the Hyundai Creta mid-size SUV with 15,037 units sold in January. The Hyundai Creta is also the most expensive vehicle among the top 5 best-sellers in India. The Creta witnessed a massive 52% jump compared to January 2022.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza Ranks Third
Maruti Suzuki Brezza with 14,359 units ranked third with a year-on-year increase of 50 percent.
Tata Punch and Hyundai Venue Round Out the Top 5
Tata Punch became the fourth best-selling SUV in the country with a year-on-year growth of 20 percent, registering sales of 12,006 units. In fifth place was the Hyundai Venue, which was not part of the top 10 best-selling vehicles list. A total of 10,738 units of the Hyundai Venue were sold last month, registering a 6% decline.

As for SUVs scheduled to be launched in the country this year, there is the Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door, Maruti Suzuki Baleno Cross and the facelifted Tata Harrier, among others.
